Instrumental Artifact Functions and Normativity

چکیده
Artifact functions have a decidedly practical character: We are interested in an artifact’s function so that we may use it to achieve our ends. The notion of instrumental functions has recently been introduced in order to emphasize the practical aspects of artifactual functions. In this chapter the normative aspects of instrumental functions are investigated, including both agent norms (concerning how and when an artifact should be used) and artifact norms (concerning welland malfunctioning artifacts). We close with a brief discussion of non-prescribed artifact uses, when an artifact is used other than as

Instrumental Desires , Instrumental Rationality
The requirements of instrumental rationality are often thought to be normative conditions on choice or intention, but this is a mistake. Instrumental rationality is best understood as a requirement of coherence on an agent's non-instrumental desires and means-end beliefs. Since only a subset of an agent's means-end beliefs concern possible actions, the connection with intention is thus more obl...

Introduction: The image quality of computed tomography (CT) can be seriously lowered by metal implants of patients. These implants are known to exert a significant impact on diagnostic accuracy due to artifacts. The current study aimed to assess the usefulness of Metal Artifact Reduction (MAR) software in the reduction of metal artifacts, in comparison to iterative rec...
متن کاملNatural sources of normativity.
Normativity is widely regarded as being naturalistically problematic. Teleosemantic theories aimed to provide a naturalistic grounding for the normativity of mental representation in biological proper function, but have been subject to a variety of criticisms and would in any case provide only a thin naturalist platform for grounding normativity more generally. Here I present an account that id...
متن کاملDevelopmental Normativity and Normative Development
Development is guided by multiple norms, and further normativities emerge in development. This should be a commonplace observation — after all, it characterizes the core dialectic of developmental processes — but normativity is instead a perplexing and sometimes desperately ignored aspect of development. I will address some reasons why normativity is so perplexing, reasons that begin with Parme...
متن کاملOver-imitating preschoolers believe unnecessary actions are normative and enforce their performance by a third party.
Over-imitation, which is common in children, is the imitation of elements of an action sequence that are clearly unnecessary for reaching the final goal. A variety of cognitive mechanisms have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. Here, 48 3- and 5-year-olds together with a puppet observed an adult demonstrate instrumental tasks that included an unnecessary action. Failure of the puppet to ...
